Antique Painting with Allegorical Subject Oil on Canvas XIX Century
Oil painting on canvas. The large painting recalls the pictorial methods of the 17th century but is from a later period, and was created on a canvas applied to an older one. It depicts the allegory of the arts, presented in the guise of a young and rich girl who, in her studio, is intent on painting, while on either side of her two other young women are leafing through musical scores and, on the right, a boy with a chisel and hammer in hand, he dedicates himself to sculpture. The scene is rich in details, especially in the description of the clothes and jewels of the woman in the centre, as well as in that of the fabrics that furnish the room, the rich brocades that cover the seat, the table, the curtains. In the painting there is a clear patch at the bottom right. The painting is presented in an antique gilded frame.
