Sabbetay Sevi nacque a Smirne nel 1626. Dopo studi talmudici e cabalistici visse per molti anni in semi-isolamento, con fasi alterne di depressione e di esaltazione. Sevi convinse se stesso e gli altri di essere il messia e un movimento religioso molto ampio andò diffondendosi e interessò anche gli ebrei della diaspora. Il governo ottomano ordinò il suo arresto e lui si convertì all'islamismo assumendo il nome di Aziz Mehmet. Ciò non bastò per zittire le polemiche tra i suoi fedeli e così fu esiliato in Albania dove morì nel 1676. Il movimento messianico da lui ispirato proseguì anche dopo la sua morte, continuando a influenzare il mondo ebraico per quasi tutto il Settecento.
