Discusses the stance of the GDR toward the Nazi past and toward the Jews and the State of Israel. The elite that came to power in East Germany after World War II denied any responsibility for Nazi crimes and any collective guilt of the German people, who were, in their view, the victims of Nazism. Asserts that this declaration of innocence was imposed on the country in the immediate postwar period in order to rehabilitate the society; in this context, Jewish victims were viewed as victims of Nazism just like all other Germans. The rejection of a Jewish national identity was translated into policy by refusing to pay reparations to the Jews as a national group, and by isolating East German Jewish institutions from the world Jewish institutions. Concludes that Stalinism and the Cold War determined the anti-Israel, pro-Arab policy of the GDR.
